抄録: Owing to the recent global expansion of Japan's economic activities and her international collaboration schemes, the Japanese language has come to be recognized, not simply as an exotic language in the Far hast, but as one of the important international languages in global politics and economy. This has been instrumental in increasing peoples awareness of the accountability of Japanese language teaching and consequently the necessity to assess the levels of the learners' proficiency of Japanese more accurately. Recognizing this global trend surrounding Japanese language teaching, the present paper firstly emphasized the necessity to assess the oral proficiency of Japanese language learners, and secondly described the Japanese oral proficiency test conducted by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on its framework, procedure and evaluation method. The paper also presented several implications which the described oral proficiency test has for Japanese language teaching at university level. The paper was concluded with a suggestion for the standardization of the Japanese oral proficiency test on the global scale.
